It may have been the first week of January, but panto was still very much in full swing at Norwich Theatre Royal with their production of Jack and the Beanstalk.

I’m uncertain where to start with this one as there was so much of everything… plenty of silly shenanigans, jokes and comedy for all ages, a group performance of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ on an inflatable beanstalk, 80s inspired costumes that also resembled space attire! All the expected panto madness you might say.

Aptly set in the town of ‘Norwich’ the story follows Jack as he sets off on the quest to save the town from the giant Bonecrunch (voice of Karl Minns, one half of the comedy duo The Nimmo Twins). There are changes to the traditional tale to keep the show current, although at times I felt this took away from typical panto tale expectations.

Leading the cast for another year of outrageous costumes is Richard Guantlett as Dame Trott – his passion for panto is infectious. Alongside Richard was Rufus Hound whose entrances provided plenty of laughs as King Nigel. Completing the comedic trio was Blair Cameron who confidently stepped into the role of Jack with a loveable and engaging energy. My favourite character had to be Pat, the cow, who was brought to life by udderly fabulous Amanda Henderson.

Jack and the Beanstalk at Norwich Theatre Royal was bursting with colour, imagination and of course audience participation. There were some great song choices this year too. Now, I’m not being a villain here as I love a good panto, but Jack and the Beanstalk isn’t one of my favourites.

Norwich Theatre have already announced that the 2023 panto will be Sleeping Beauty. I’m excited to see who will be providing Norfolk with entertainment this panto season!
